The six Zen Patriarchs of
China were—Sáu vị Tổ Thiền tông của Trung Hoa l :
1)
Bodhidharma (Daruma—jap): Bồ Đề Đạt Ma.
2)
Hui-k’o (Yeka or Eka—jap): Huệ Khả.
3)
Seng-Tsan (Sisan—jap): Tăng Xán.
4)
Tao-Hsin (Doshin—jap): Đạo Tín.
5)
Hung-Jen (Gumin—jap): Hoằng Nhẫn.
6)
Hui-Neng (Yeno or Eno—jap): Huệ Năng (for the Northern school, they named
Shen-Hsiu their sixth patriarch).
Zen Patriarchs (India): Tổ
Thiền tông Ấn Độ—When the Buddha gave his “transmission without words” to
Mahakasyapa, he thereby became the first Indian Patriarch of what is now
called Zen. Afterwards Mahakasyapa made the same transmission to the
disciple Ananda, who thus became the second Indian Patriarch. The series
continued until Bodhidharma, who was the twenty-eighth Patriarch—Khi Đức
Phật “truyền vô tự” cho Đại Ca Diếp thì ông ông n y trở th nh Sơ Tổ của
cái m bây giờ người ta gọi l Thiền. Về sau n y Đại Ca Diếp truyền lại
cho đệ tử A Nan l m Nhị Tổ. Dòng Thiền tiếp tục đến Bồ Đề Đạt Ma, Tổ thứ

good turn deserves another.

Ăn để sống chớ không phải sống để ăn: You should eat to live, and not live
to eat.
Không thể có sự hòa đồng ở nơi m ai cũng muốn l m ông chủ: There is no
good accord where every man would be a lord.
Ăn trái nhớ kẻ trồng cây, uống nước nhớ người đ o giếng: Not to cast dirt
into that fountain of which you have sometimes drunk.
Bạn hữu trong cơn khốn khó mới đích thực l bạn hữu: A firend in need is a
friend indeed.
Bạn xấu còn tệ hơn
l kẻ thù trước mặt: Bad friends are worse than confronting enemies.
Bảy mươi chưa chắc mình l nh: Every bean has its black.
Thoát ly h nh vi ác độc l bắt đầu thiện l nh: The flee from evil is the
beginning of good.
