At that time venerable Kumaarakassapa lived in the Dark forest.When the night was waning a certain deity illuminated the whole of the Dark forest and approached venerable Kumaarakassapa stood on a side, and said, Bhikkhu, this ant hill smokes in the night and blazes in the day. Như vầy tôi nghe. Một thời Thế Tôn ở Savatthi, tại Jetavana, vườn ông Anathapindika. Lúc bấy giờ, Tôn giả Kumara Kassapa trú tại Andhavana. Rồi một vị Thiên, đêm đã gần tàn, với hào quang rực rỡ chiếu sáng toàn thể Andhavana, đến chỗ Tôn giả Kumara Kassapa ở, sau khi đến, bèn đứng một bên. Sau khi đứng một bên, vị Thiên ấy nói với Tôn giả Kumara Kassapa: "Tỷ-kheo, Tỷ-kheo! Gò mối này ban đêm phun khói, ban ngày chiếu sáng. |

The brahmin said remove the tortoise and dig with the tool .Digging with the tool he saw a slaughter house. Good one a slaughter house. The brahmin said, wise one remove the slaughter house and dig with the tool. Digging with the tool he saw a tendon of flesh. Good one a tendon of flesh. The brahmin said, wise one remove the tendon of flesh and dig with the tool. Digging with the tool, he saw a snake. Good one a snake. The brahmin said, wise one, stop do not hurt the snake, worship the snake. Bhikkhu, approach the Blessed One and ask this question and as he explains it bear it in mind. In this world of gods and men, together with its Maaras, Brahmaas and the community of recluses and brahmins I do not see anyone who could answer this question and convince the mind except the Thus Gone One, a disciple of the Thus Gone One or one who has heard it .Saying that the deity vanished from there.. . |
"Một Bà-la-môn nói như sau: "Này kẻ trí, hãy cầm gươm và đào lên". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy một then cửa: "Thưa Tôn giả, một then cửa". "Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Này kẻ trí, hãy lấy then cửa lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy con nhái: "Thưa Tôn giả, một con nhái". Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Này kẻ trí, hãy đem con nhái lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy con đường hai ngã: "Thưa Tôn giả, một con đường hai ngã". " Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Này kẻ trí hãy lấy con đường hai ngã lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy một đồ lọc sữa: "Thưa Tôn giả, một đồ lọc sữa". " Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Hãy lấy đồ lọc sữa lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy một con rùa: "Thưa Tôn giả, một con rùa". "Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Này kẻ trí, hãy lấy con rùa lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy một con dao phay: "Thưa Tôn giả, một con dao phay". "Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Này kẻ trí, hãy lấy con dao phay lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy một miếng thịt: "Thưa Tôn giả một miếng thịt". "Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Này kẻ trí, hãy lấy miếng thịt lên, cầm gươm đào thêm". Người có trí cầm gươm đào lên, thấy con rắn hổ: "Thưa Tôn giả, con rắn hổ". "Vị Bà-la-môn nói: "Hãy để con rắn hổ yên, chớ đụng chạm con rắn hổ, hãy đảnh lễ con rắn hổ". "Này Tỷ-kheo, hãy đến chỗ Thế Tôn ở và hỏi những câu hỏi ấy. Thế Tôn trả lời Tôn giả như thế nào, hãy như vậy thọ trì. Này Tỷ-kheo, Ta không thấy ai trên cõi đời, với chư Thiên, các Ma vương, với Phạm thiên, các chúng Sa-môn và Bà-la-môn, chư Thiên và loài Người có thể hướng tâm để trả lời những câu hỏi ấy, trừ Như Lai, đệ tử Như Lai hay những ai đã được nghe hai vị này". Vị Thiên ấy nói như vậy. Sau khi nói xong như vậy, vị ấy biến mất ở nơi đây. |

Rồi Tôn giả Kumara Kassapa, sau khi đêm ấy đã mãn, đến tại chỗ Thế Tôn ở, sau khi đến xong, đảnh lễ Thế Tôn và ngồi xuống một bên. Sau khi ngồi xuống một bên, Tôn giả Kumara Kassapa bạch Thế Tôn: -- Bạch Thế Tôn, đêm nay, một vị Thiên, đêm đã gần tàn, với hào quang rực rỡ chiếu sáng toàn thể Andhavana, đến chỗ con ở, sau khi đến liền đứng một bên. Khi đứng một bên, vị Thiên ấy nói với con: "Tỷ-kheo, Tỷ-kheo! Gò mối này, ban đêm phun khói, ban ngày chiếu sáng. Một vị Bà-la-môn nói như sau: "Này kẻ trí, hãy cầm gươm đào lên". Người có trí cầm gươm, đào lên thấy một then cửa... (như trên)... đệ tử Như Lai hay những ai đã được nghe hai vị này". Bạch Thế Tôn, vị Thiên ấy nói như vậy, nói xong liền biến mất tại chỗ ấy. |

Này Tỷ-kheo, cái gì thuộc về công việc ban ngày, ban đêm suy tầm, suy nghĩ, như vậy là ban đêm phun khói. Này Tỷ-kheo, cái gì sau khi suy tầm, suy tư ban đêm, ban ngày đem ra thực hành, về thân, về lời nói, về ý, như vậy là ban ngày chói sáng. Này Tỷ-kheo, Bà-la-môn là đồng nghĩa với Như Lai, bậc A-la-hán, Chánh Ðẳng Giác. Này Tỷ-kheo, người có trí là đồng nghĩa với Tỷ-kheo hữu học. Này Tỷ-kheo, cái gươm là đồng nghĩa với trí tuệ của bậc Thánh. |

A tendon of flesh is a synonym for interest and greed. Wise one take the tool and dig is its meaning. The snake is a synonym for the bhikkhu with desires destroyed. Wait! Do not hurt the snake, worship the snake, is its meaning. |
Này Tỷ-kheo, đào lên là đồng nghĩa với tinh tấn, tinh cần. Này Tỷ-kheo, cái then cửa là đồng nghĩa với vô minh; đem then cửa lên là từ bỏ vô minh này; kẻ có trí, cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, con nhái là đồng nghĩa với phẫn nộ hiềm hận; đem con nhái lên là từ bỏ phẫn nộ hiềm hận này; kẻ có trí cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, con đường hai ngã là đồng nghĩa với nghi hoặc; đem con đường hai ngã lên là từ bỏ nghi hoặc này; kẻ có trí cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, đồ lọc sữa là đồng nghĩa với năm triền cái: dục tham triền cái, sân triền cái, hôn trầm thụy miên triền cái, trạo cử hối quá triền cái, nghi hoặc triền cái; đem đồ lọc sữa lên là từ bỏ năm triền cái này; kẻ có trí cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, con rùa là đồng nghĩa với năm thủ uẩn, tức là sắc thủ uẩn, thọ thủ uẩn, tưởng thủ uẩn, hành thủ uẩn, thức thủ uẩn; đem con rùa lên là từ bỏ năm thủ uẩn này; kẻ có trí cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, con dao phay là đồng nghĩa với năm dục trưởng dưỡng, tức là các sắc do mắt nhận thức, khả ái, khả hỷ, khả lạc, khả ý, kích thích lòng dục, hấp dẫn. Các tiếng do tai nhận thức... Các hương do mũi nhận thức... Các vị do lưỡi nhận thức... Các xúc do thân cảm xúc, khả ái, khả hỷ, khả lạc, khả ý, kích thích lòng dục, hấp dẫn; lấy con dao phay lên là từ bỏ năm dục trưởng dưỡng này, kẻ có trí, cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, miếng thịt là đồng nghĩa với hỷ tham; lấy miếng thịt lên là từ bỏ hỷ tham này; kẻ có trí, cầm gươm đào lên là ý nghĩa này. Này Tỷ-kheo, con rắn hổ là đồng nghĩa với vị Tỷ-kheo đã diệt trừ các lậu hoặc; hãy để con rắn hổ yên, chớ đụng chạm con rắn hổ, hãy đảnh lễ con rắn hổ, là ý nghĩa này. |
